The Universal Media Disc, or UMD is an optical disc medium developed for use with the PlayStation Portable, or PSP. Sony's proprietary format is designed to store games, videos (movies) and music for playback on the PlayStation Portable (PSP) device. A Universal Media Disc (UMD) is capable of holding 1.8 gigabytes of data on a medium a little over 60mm wide and 4 mm high complete with protective plastic sleeve, similar to the Sony Minidisc format. In addition to being the defacto storage medium for official PSP games, UMD offers the film industry another format with which to distribute movies. Movies distributed on the Universal Media Disc format benefit from the PSP's generous 480x272 pixel resolution at 16:9 ratio and impressive array of some 16.77 million colours.
