Classic scenario -- barely has a hot new product achieved a degree of market penetration before rumours of a successor hit the media. However, surely nobody expects Sony to be lethargic over a forward thinking roadmap for the PSP? In which case, we think it wise to assume some credibility for any rumour, speculation and hearsay regarding the PSP '2'. Earlier this month, Shacknews reported that sources close to Sony have divulged particulars on the anticipated successor to the current PSP -- PSP '1' if you will. Sony refused somewhat predictably to comment, however the news, or more specifically, details within the news, give more insight into the years ahead before such a release (Shacknews source reports 2009). Built in storage seems the biggest news web-wide. Storage concerns on the current PSP (considering initial release was hardly years ago) are somewhat lacking -- users who want to take advantage of media outside of the UMD format are forced to shell out more hard-earned on another proprietary format, i.e. MemoryStick Pro Duo. Latest reports centre around a hard drive scenario for the PSP 2, although looking back the earliest rumours placed 8GB of NAND flash memory at the heart of the new unit. UMD compatibility, if there are any discs remaining for the PSP 2 to be compatible with, seems, oddly, to be missing. Despite a fairly horrific crash in both support and sales for UMD movies, UMD games have been fairly successful and will no doubt continue to do so as the portfolio of titles swells and matures. Therefore to leave out backwards compatibility for UMD games at the very least seems strange. While at the point of release in 2009, you would expect the recently announced online gaming portal from Sony to be well established and allow users to download games to the PSP ‘2’ over the internet, what about the millions of UMD game disc owners that already exist?

I reckon if there's going to be a PSP 2, all that you would need to make it perfect (apart from all the PSP '1' tech bits) would be compatibility with normal CD roms including PS 1 & 2 and all the DVDs you've got. And poss - even direct compatibility with PSP '1' eventually.

Extension of the PSP's compatibility is certainly something that could do with improvement, but anyone familiar with Sony in the past know that the current situation it is nothing new. However, the ability to read in CDs or DVDs without an external drive is going to do no favours to the form factor of any unit offered. UMD's were a nice thought but are going to reside in the same place that Minidiscs do in a world obsessed with generic storage mediums. | Written by Guest on 2006-12-17 18:45:27
I think that coming out with a PSP2 would be a mistake on Sonys behalf. the best thing, i think, to do is to keep the format UMD, but enable you to take out the disk inside the UMD which, prove me if i'm wrong, is the same size as a "mini CD". doing this will then mean that Sony can keep all the PSP Movies and Games up on the market if they do decide to bring out a PSP2. AND it means that they can keep the UMD format on the market is people will be able to create compilations of music and videos and anything else on their PC, and create a huge collection of UMDs that they can play anywhere and everywhere on their PSP!! | |
