PSP Firmware 3.4 Released

Wednesday, 18 April 2007

Another month and another firmware update for the Sony PSP.  Sony Computer Entertainment has released version 3.4 of the PSP operating software.

A glance at the change log reveals that although no significant features have been added, this release is geared towards running compatibility between the PSP and the PlayStation 3 console.

Officially, the updates made are as follows:

 * Support for PlayStation Network titles has expanded.
 * The method of managing certificates under [Game] has been changed.

While the first change just refers to running compatibility tweaks, the second hides a rather significant change to owners of both a PSP and a PS3.  Previous to this PSP firmware release and the parallel release of the updated version 1.7 of the PS3 firmware, PS3 owners downloaded PSOne games to their PS3 which then in turn allowed them to be played on the PSP handheld units.  Both a game file and a license file were necessary to achieve this.  Perhaps due in part to the speed with which this protection was bypassed, allowing PSP owners to create their on license free versions from original PSOne discs, the license has been integrated directly into the game file.

While the license method has changed, there is one immediate benefit for PS3 owners in that it is now possible to play those download PSOne titles on both the PSP and the PS3.
