Bloomberg has reported that Sony Pictures Entertainment plans to include portable versions of movies released on the Blu-ray DVD format. Once purchased, the portable versions could be transferred to laptops and other portable devices.
In an interview at CES 2007 in Las Vegas this week, David Bishop,
head of Sony's home entertainment unit indicated the feature would be
rolled out this year. Bishop said, "It's not currently part of
anything on our current release schedule, but we'll probably roll it
out sometime this year,". While there was no specific mention of
PSP compatibility, bundling pre-formatted movies for Sony PlayStation
Portable would certainly swing favour amoungst those owning the gaming
device and help bolster video usage. It would also be a useful selling
point to support Blu-Ray as the high definition DVD format of choice. The UMD format however, would lose out to a move which would ultimately shift more film sales to a new distribution channel.
